Shadow greens are where paintings turn muddy, usually because we reach for black. Instead we deepen and neutralise from within the palette, and watch a green stay alive as it darkens.

Succulents, olive, dusty sage — the grey-greens are the hardest to mix and the easiest to overdo. This one is about restraint: how a little of the right complement makes a green soft and powdery instead of dull.
